Buying Your First House: Prepping for the Plunge

firsthomeJust as important as home design and curb appeal is home safety. Check out this list of things to look for when shopping for a home, which may lower your homeowner’s premium.

Built Tough: Masonry construction is more fire and wind-resistant than wood-frame houses. If you’re shopping in an earthquake zone, give preference to newer homes built to current codes.

Up to Date: Looking at a “fixer-upper”? You may also be looking at a higher insurance bill if electrical and heating systems are out of date or the roof is in poor repair. Any outdated construction that fails to meet current codes is a potential problem. A certified home inspector will help identify any major problems before you purchase the home.

Danger Zone: Minimize hazards on your property by repairing any broken steps, shoveling sidewalks or fixing items in need of repair that might otherwise cause harm or damage to someone else.

Location, Location, Location: Look for a home in a safe neighborhood that is easily accessible to responding fire departments.

Did you know that checking your home or auto insurance coverage yearly may be a good way to save? You could be paying too much. Check with your local agent for other money-saving ideas, such as combining your auto and home policies or visit our webpage:
