Things to Do in Monmouth & Ocean Counties on a Budget this January 2013

imageRing in 2013 with some quality time with friends and family! Get out there and try something different and new – perhaps even something on your new year’s resolution list! With these free or affordable activities, you can have fun even if it’s cold outside…

Saturday, January 5th: If you are looking to try your hand at archery, sign up for an open shoot from 10am-1pm at the Thompson Park Activity Barn, Lincroft. All equipment is provided. This is a non-instructional program open to ages 8 and up (under 18 with adult). Cost is $7 per person; cash or check only. For more information, call 732-842-4000, ext. 4312.

Sunday, January 6th: Get creative with ceramics from 12:30pm-4:30pm at the Thompson Park Creative Arts Center, Thompson Park, Lincroft, and choose from a large selection of bisque fired pottery pieces to glaze and make your own. The cost is $6 per hour plus price of bisque ware; cash or check only. Pieces will be fired in about a week. For more information, call 732-842-4000, ext. 4343.

The award-winning Vital Theatre Company is pleased to bring the production “Angelina Ballerina, The Musical,” with book and lyrics by Susan DiLallo and music by Ben Morss, to the Strand Theaterlocated in Lakewood. Show times are 2pm and 7pm and tickets are only $18 (plus service charge). A great and affordable night for young girls!

Thursday, January 10th: Ladies, how would you like a Girls’ Night Out!? From 6pm-9pm Laurita Winery invites all ladies and their friends (21 years or older) to visit for an evening of fun at one of the best NJ wineries! The event includes FREE admission, music, food, wine and the relaxed setting of the winery with a fireplace going and some of these specials: $5 glass of wine, 10% off all wine bottle purchases, Yoga Class 6:30-7:30pm ($10 – Yoga Session or Yoga Class), food specials and live entertainment by musical guest Gary C.

Wednesday, January 16th: Take steps toward vibrant health and freeing your mind from everyday stress. Learn about breath, vibration, concentration, and movement in this relaxing and uplifting yoga class. Steven Russell, certified teacher of Dharma Yoga, has studied with Sri Dharma Mittra in NYC, and has been practicing yoga for over ten years. He welcomes everyone from beginner to experienced yogis. Venture over to the Monmouth County Library headquarters at 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. This program is for adults, ages 18 and older.  Please bring a yoga mat, or large towel to class.

Monday, January 21st: The air is crisp, the sun stays low and there are great shadows – this is what winter light is all about. When you add in some snow the possibilities are endless. During this 3-hour creative photography workshop exploring winter light you will be wandering the winter beach focusing on available light, patterns, textures and composition. This fun workshop finishes with a nice cup of hot chocolate beside the fireplace at The Atlantic View Inn while reviewing your images. Tuesday, January 22nd: Start the new year right with “Foods That Are Good for Your Heart,” presented by Diane West, Registered Dietician. Diane will lead an informative and interactive workshop about foods that are good for your heart, including “super foods” that can reduce the risk of stroke, heart attacks and ways to keep you on a healthy eating regiment to prolong your life! This workshop will be held at 11am at the Senior Center, 1607 Corlies Avenue, Neptune NJ 07753.

Thursday, January 24th: With the holidays behind us and spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how to get those home-improvement projects off the ground! Show your photos of problem areas to award-winning interior designer Carrie Oesmann, ASID, who will offer advice on how to create a well-designed living space based on her many years of experience in the field. Ms. Oesmann, the owner of Bailiwick Designs, will help us by De-Mystifying Design. So, bring in that challenge! Show them your photos, bring your questions and get inspired!
